AltaClaro Appoints Julie Ryan as Head of Experiential Learning
Platform to expand training offerings under leadership of University of Southern California law professor

New York, NY, May 26, 2017 Experiential legal learning platform AltaClaro announced today the expansion of its leadership team with the addition of Julie Ryan, Associate Professor of Lawyering Skills at the University of Southern California (USC) Gould School of Law and a Partner at Acceleron Law Group, LLP. Ms. Ryan will head up the company’s Experiential Learning team.

“We are thrilled to have Julie on the team,” said Abdi Shayesteh, CEO, AltaClaro. “Julie brings years of experience in applying the experiential learning techniques that AltaClaro is now making accessible to all practitioners through its proprietary technology. Research tells us that experiential learning is the most effective way to learn, especially when conducted in a one-on-one or small group environment.”

At USC since 2010, Ms. Ryan has transformed how law students learn practical legal skills by bringing the subject matter into a real-world context. In addition to breaking out of the traditional, litigation-centric model of legal writing training by focusing her classes on the drafting and negotiation of transactional agreements, Ms. Ryan teaches and assigns work to her students exactly as she would if they were associates in her law firm.

“I’m excited to join the team at AltaClaro because the company addresses exactly what’s missing in legal training and professional development,” says Ryan. “AltaClaro fills the gap by providing a place where practitioners from all levels and backgrounds can go to gain and share expertise through interaction, simulation, and doing. The role is a natural fit and allows me to share my passion for experiential learning beyond the classroom.”

Ms. Ryan has already begun to bring her diverse experience and training skills to bear at AltaClaro, having served as a lead course developer and instructor in the company’s recent Beta Training Program. Combining Ms. Ryan’s pedagogical expertise with AltaClaro’s technology for delivering one-on-one and small group training, the six-week intensive Beta program trained recent law graduates and transitioning lawyers in the fundamentals of corporate transactions. Ms. Ryan is currently developing the company’s next series of training sessions focusing on Mergers and Acquisitions, which is expected to launch this summer.

Ms. Ryan is also author of an upcoming book, titled “Transactional Lawyering: An Experiential Approach to Communication & Problem-Solving” (Carolina Academic Press). Rooted in Ms. Ryan’s innovative teaching approach, the book is designed to be the go-to guide for law students and lawyers seeking to develop and hone their transactional lawyering skills.
